My Favorite Lid Brushes

My two favorite brushes that I use to apply eyeshadow on the lid area...are not actually lid brushes! Of all my beauty items I think the thing I have the least of is brushes. I often get so excited about new eyeshadow and lipstick colors I neglect building my brush collection. So I am always on the lookout for good quality brushes that are inexpensive.

Right now I am loving the 1/2 Loew Cornell 270 Maxine's Mop (actually a paintbrush) and the Makeup Geek Mini Concealer brush. They are both flat shader brushes great for packing on color and are around 5 dollars. I like the Maxine Mop for when I want to do an all over wash of color. The bristles are dense but soft and I also think this would work great for large eyes. I got mine at Michael's, but I think you could find it at most craft stores. The MUG brush is great for all eye sizes and I really like it for more detailed work. I use this brush to apply paint pots and other cream products quite often too.

I have heard the mini concealer is a dupe for the MAC #239 but I am not positive because I don't own it. I own for the most part Sonia Kashuk and ELF Brushes, along with some miscellaneous Sephora ones and paintbrushes. To me, if it works and is of good quality, that's what is most important. Not a high-end price tag. That's not to say that I wouldn't like more MAC brushes: I would love some! But it's also nice to save money :)

Random Post is Random

Hello! What a hectic week! Every year at work we do a fundraiser for JDRF (Juvenille Diabetes Research) and have been working on the preparations for that. We always make hair clips and accesories to sell as well as all the flyers and stuff. At the end of the month we also have a bake sale, car wash, and cut-a-thon. So yeah, a bit busy.

Sweet flower clip I made! I used fabric scrapbooking flowers, a button, a ribbon, a clip, and hot glue! We also made headbands from recycled t-shirts and rhinestones.

I wanted to post a look I did a few days ago. I reminds me of a Hawaiian sunset!

Products Used:

  • Palladio Herbal Eye Primer
  • Makeup Geek Mandarin
  • Makeup Geek Chickadee
  • MAC Samoa Silk
  • MAC Brown Down
  • MAC Vanilla
  • Urban Decay 24/7  liner in Demolition
  • Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Electric
  • Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadow in Peace
  • Ardell Falsies
  • Cargo Better than Waterproof mascara
  • Anastasia Soft Brown eyebrow pencil
  • Rhinestone from Michael's

And...one more random thing: I got a really cute pedicure! What's more relaxing?

I LOVE mint this summer!

Purple and Yellow Look with Tutorial

If you really want an eyeshadow combo to pop, use colors opposite each other on the color wheel. For example: have you ever noticed the Christmas colors red and green look awesome together? That's because they are complementary colors! I decided to do a look with purple and yellow because I received Sugarpill's Poison Plum eyeshadow in the mail a week ago and have been itching to use it! So here's the LOTD (look of the day):

First you want to prime your lid ( I used UDPP) and apply NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk. I used a small shader brush to blend it over my entire eye area.

Then, use a piece of scotch tape to get a sharp, clean line. I put it on my shirt and pulled it off a few times so it didn't tug at my skin. The skin around the eyes is delicate.

I next used an angled eyeliner brush to apply Sugarpill Poison Plum to my crease. Once this is done you can wipe off the brush  and blend the color upward a bit.

I used a blending brush with a little bit of the color Wisteria by Makeup Geek on it to blend the shadow upwards and get rid of any harsh lines.

Using a flat shader brush, pat on a matte bright yellow color. I used MUFE 02.

Apply MUG Mandarine (or any bright orange color) to outer corner and blend into yellow using MUG Chickadee.

Use a fluffy brush to apply a matte white color to browbone and use to blend out the purple more if needed. You can also add a little matte black to the crease with a small crease brush to add depth at this point, just be sure to blend well. Fill in brows, add liner and mascara.

I then used my angled eyeshadow brush to apply Poison Plum to my lower lash line. I cleaned off the brush and also used it to apply a little of the matte yellow to the inner third under my eye. Blend these colors well together.

And voila! I used makeup remover to get rid of any fallout under the eyes (it sometimes happens with such pigmented colors) and applied a little concealer under my eye. I used the Coastals Scents Camo Quad in Light. So how was that for my first picture tutorial? Hopefully that was helpful and if so I will post more looks in this format.

Fiery Eyes

This is an interesting look for me. Normally when I wear colorful makeup, I stick with cooler colors. They are opposite on the color wheel of my brown eyes so they really pop! But I thought I'd try something a little different this time.

I really like how this look turned out but I had a hard time getting good pictures of it because the lighting was bad. So this is one of the only decent pics I could get, and I had to brighten up the photo a lot. I was inspired by the colors of fire and tried to stick with yellow. orange and red. I used scotch tape to get the clean line and shape and attached some rhinestones I got from Michael's for added flare. I decided not to do false lashes because it was already pretty dramatic.

Products used:

  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk
  • MUG Burlesque
  • MUG Razzleberry
  • MUG Chickadee
  • MUG Yellow Brick Road
  • MUFE 03 (matte white)
  • Urban Decay Blackout
  • Urban Decay Half-Baked (bottom lash line)
  • MAC Down Brown (fill eyebrows)
  • Palladio liquid liner black
  • Maybelline Blackest Black Great Lash mascara
  • Jewels from craft store
  • Anastasia brow wax

On a nerdy note, these colors also remind me of Gryffindor ;)  I was so excited when I passed by Barnes and Noble the other day and saw a poster advertising J.K. Rowling's new book! It's totally not related to Harry, but she's still an amazing author. Let's see if lightning strikes twice!

Go To Look

Hello again! My look of the day is one I do often. I'm not saying I wear this everyday or anything, but when I want to look nice but am not feeling creative this is one of my go to looks. Honestly, my everyday look is not that exciting as its usually just my foundation routine, blush, mascara, and a nude lipstick or gloss. So yeah, this look would make for a better post!

Don't mind the awkward half smile lol!

Products used:

  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • MAC Painterly Paint Pot
  • MAC Melon pigment on lid
  • Milani Rich Java eyeshadow in crease and under lower lash line
  • MAC Ricepaper on brow bone
  • Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero
  • Benefit Bad Gal Lash mascara
  • Anastasia brow pencil in Soft Brown
  • Ardell Demi Wispies Lashes
  • Revlon Colorstay Foundation in Buff
  • Palladio Rice Powder in Natural
  • Nars Deep Throat blush (one of my favorite ever blushes!)
  • MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Porcelain Pink
  • Benefit Boi-ing concealer (lightest shade)
  • Lorac Nude Beach lipstick (if I only had one lipstick this would be it!)

It's a pretty easy look to achieve overall. I also wanted to post a pic of my nails I did the other day. I'm terrible with polish so it was stickers again! These ones are Sally Hanson. I can't remember the the name but I love how cheerful and summery these look!

Tardis Inspired Makeup

Let geekery and makeup unite! Doctor Who is one of my favorite shows and waiting for the new season this fall is agonizing! I was inspired to do this look after reading some articles on the BBC website. I have to admit I love the "new" Doctor Who best (meaning the the 2005 reboot) but I still enjoy some of the classic Tom Baker episodes as well. Thanks to my dad for having me watch 'The Ark in Space' and 'The Androids of Tara'!

  • Palladio Herbal Eye Primer
  • NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil Milk
  • MAC Platinum Pigment, inner third of eye
  • Urban Decay Polyester Bride, tear duct area
  • Urban Decay Ransom mixed with MAC Deep Truth, outer third and crease
  • MAC Contrast, outer V blended into crease
  • Unknown white matte shadow mixed with Mac Blanc Type on browbone and to blend
  • MAC Freshwater under lashline and to blend the middle of the lid
  • Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero
  • Cargo Better than Waterproof mascara
  • Ardell Accent Lashes
  • Urban Decay Buck to fill brows

I even went a bit timelordy with the outfit! I wore blue and white and wore my pocket watch necklace.

For the rest of my face I did the usual foundation routine and wore a mix of Benefit Coralista and MAC Peaches for blush. For the lips I applied NYX Pumpkin Pie Lipstick and one of my Stila Lip Glazes (I forget which one).

Ahh Eleven... I love him but I miss Ten sometimes

Water Sign-Pisces Inspired Look

Hola again! Inspiration hit me so I guess it's two posts this week! I was playing around with eyeshadows the other day and realized I hadn't done a look with blues in awhile. I really wanted to use my MUG Shimmermint shadow as well because it's such a gorgeous color but I haven't really experimented with it much. So this is the look I came up with:

The ocean colors reminded me of my astrological sign, Pisces. I realize this is not the most wearable look but I wanted to get creative. I think it might be fun to do another astrological look but we'll see! I'll play around and see what I come up with!

  • MUG Shimmermint
  • MAC Freshwater
  • MAC Deep Truth
  • MAC Contrast
  • MAC Moon's Reflection
  • MAC Blanc Type
  • MAC Vanilla
  • NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk
  • Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Sabbath
  • Cargo Better Than Waterproof mascara
  • Anastasia Brow Pencil in Soft Brown
  • MAC Lipstick in Blankety

Sweet Target Finds

I think I may be a little behind on discovering the ELF Elements Custom Compact but I am definitely glad I did! I was looking around my local Target and I spotted this bargain priced beauty!  They are only a few bucks and you can find them at most drugstores.

This is a sleek and sturdy customizable plastic palette that is magnetic and holds 4 shadows.  They are meant to be used to hold ELF eyeshadow pans, but will work for any eyeshadow pan that is the same size and shape.

I used mine to hold a few of my MAC shadows. I should mention, MUG eyeshadows will fit in this as well, but you will need to glue magnetic strips or dots to them. Same goes for de-potted MAC shadows. However, the shadows I placed in there were the MAC Pro-Palette refill pans , so they already had magnets on the bottom of the pan and popped right in! Colors shown: Mulch, Vanilla, Samoa Silk, and Contrast. This palette also came with a little applicator, but I knew it was something I wouldn't use so I threw it out. It just seemed too small to be able to use to apply eyeshadow.

I found this in the office supply aisle! It's meant for pens and junk, but as soon as I saw this I thought it would great for organizing and storing eyeliners and such. I used it for lip liners, eyebrow stuff, mascara, and my NYX Jumbo Pencils as well. I really like looking around Target to find cool makeup storage options. They have a lot of cute colorful stuff that's pretty reasonably priced. It's really so much much easier to utilize your collection when it's organized.

Summer Sun Inspired Makeup

Anyone that knows me will know that summer is not my favorite season. I loved it as a kid because I loved going swimming and having family barbecues. But now it's just a little to hot and muggy for my taste. There are some good things about summer though, like brighter makeup looks! Well, and the 4th of July is fun, but anywho...back on topic. This isn't really an overly bright look,  but I think it would add a little sunshine to daytime or work makeup.

I used Palladio Herbal Eye Primer and NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk allover my lid to prime and create a blank canvas. I applied MAC Ricepaper from lid to brow bone. I then applied a mixture of MAC Amber Lights and Makeup Geek Cocoa Bear in my crease and swept it down under my lower lash line. I put a little more Ricepaper  in the tear duct area. Next I added mascara, liner, filled in the brows, and put on my Ardell 107 lashes.

The full face. Forgot the foundation, but the blush is Glow by MUD. (my favorite blush right now! I like it better than my NARS ones and it's a lot cheaper!) On my lips I am wearing Lorac lipstick in Vanity and Stila Lip Glaze in Kaleidoscope. Oh, and my highlighter is NARS Albatross.

This is before I added highlighter, a second coat of mascara, and false lashes. So you can definitely tone down this look even more if you want. Another thing I might add: this look would be perfect for blue-eyed gals. Browns, yellows, and oranges are opposite on the color wheel and so they will really make your eyes pop!

Prom Hair and Makeup

One of my other passions besides makeup is hair. I started cosmetology school in 2008 and have been working in a salon for 2 years. I love the creative aspect of hair and the endless possibilities it presents. So it should come as no surprise that I absolutely love prom season! The sky is the limit when it comes to prom styles. And this year I got to apply makeup to a few lovely ladies as well!

This is the hair and makeup I did for our receptionist's junior prom. It took over 45 minutes to curl all of her hair because it is so long and thick! I also wanted to make sure the curls were tight because her hair doesn't hold curl well.

I did her her hair for homecoming last year as well. I also helped her with her eyeshadow. I love working on her; she's such a sweet and pretty girl!

Using the Too Faced Natural Palette

This is a look I did recently using my Too Faced Natural Palette. I've had this palette for awhile, but haven't created any looks with it for a few months.

I used my UDPP (Urban Decay primer potion) all  over my lid. I then applied the color Honey Pot to the lid, blended a little bit of Erotica in the crease and lower lash line, and put Heaven on the brow bone. So a pretty simple look overall. All i did then for the eyes was apply liner, mascara, and filled in my brows. Well, okay, I did apply false eyelashes but that's optional, if you are going for a daytime or natural look.

This palette is great because it's so versatile and you create a lot of different looks. It's also wonderful for beginners because the colors all complement  each other and there's even little idea cards included if you having trouble figuring out where to apply what.

My Top 5 Favorite Pink Lipsticks

A quick fun post! I often have trouble narrowing down what products to get when I am tight on cash so hopefully this is helpful to someone!

MAC Chatterbox: A noticeable but not overwhelming pink. It has a creamy texture and great color payoff. It's not a warm pink, but more neutral than cool so I think it would be flattering on different skin tones.

MAC Angel: A beautiful soft pink. This is one of my favorites because it works with many different looks. It does have a bit of a blue base though, so if your complexion is warmer I would wear it either with a peachy gloss over top like Stila Lip Glaze in Apricot or pair it with warm eyeshadow colors.

Lorac Premiere: A hard shade to describe. Very pretty though. I'd say it's a sort of soft rosy brown pink. And I love the smell! It reminds me of a mixture of cocoa butter and vanilla but it's not too strong. I like this color on fairer skin but I don't think it would work on darker skin tones.

Maybelline Born With It with NARS Orgasm lip gloss:  Okay, so technically this is not just a lipstick but I love pairing these lippies! They look great together! The lipstick is a nice baby pink and you can't beat the price, however it is not as pigmented as some of my other favorites. So I like adding the gloss to make it pop! The golden shimmer also really warms up the color!

Smashbox Pink Petal: A great pink for spring! Bright, but not neon and still very wearable. Good staying power.

From L to R:  Chatterbox, Premiere, Pink Petal, Born With It, Angel

Z-Palette and Nails

Hola again! Just wanted to show off my two newest obsessions the first being: my Z-Palette!

The one I have is the Leopard-Small Palette. I first heard of these palettes on Makeup Geek and figured I would try a small one to start. I love it! You can see all of your colors through the top so no searching through mass amounts of stuff and the bottom is magnetic so you can put all different shapes and sizes of eyeshadow pans! So far I have three Makeup Geek shadows (Purple Rain, Chickadee, and Burlesque) and a few MUFE ones. This is also great for pressed pigments. Every palette now comes with magnetic stickers you can label, so you can easily use them for de-potted MAC shadows too (most of the time de-potted shadows have non-metal pans, such as the NYX eyeshadow trios). The Z-Palettes come in two sizes: large and small and come in a variety of colors and patterns. I really like these for everyday use but I've heard some say they are not the sturdiest for traveling.

I ordered another palette today, along with some MAC pigment samples and empty pans so that I can press them. I'll have to post again when they come in the mail. And now my other latest obsession: nail stickers! The ones I am wearing in the picture are a set of Kiss ones I found at Walgreens over a mint colored polish; don't remember the name. You basically just put them on and file off the the excess! There's no dry time which is awesome because I'm the most impatient person ever lol. I immediately bought 7 more packs! I couldn't resist I'm addicted :)

I even put one on my toe!

My Birthday Look

Now, this is a bit late because I'm a St. Patrick's Day baby. I normally do something a bit more colorful (usually green!)  but I was kind of digging the neutrals that day. Also my birthday fell on a Sunday and that equals lazy day for me lol. So this is the FOTD I came up with:

I wish I could remember all the products used but I will post that I remember:

  • Eyes-Urban Decay Primer Potion, Urban Decay Naked 2 palette, Stila In the Moment palette, Urban Decay liner in Zero, Anastasia brow pencil, Ardell falsies, Cargo Better Than Waterproof mascara
  • Face-MUFE HD primer, Revlon Colorstay in Buff, BE Mineral Veil, concealer (?), I think the blush was Nars Deep Throat and I wore a highlighter but I forget which one.
  • Lips- MAC Angel lipstick, unknown gloss

I really like this look. I like to play with fun colors, but this would work well for work or maybe even a bridal look.

Hello interwebz!

Well, I'm on the internet enough and I've wanted to start a blog for a long time, so...here goes! Right now I'm still trying to figure out how to design this page but once I get the kinks worked out I'll start posting some makeup looks!
